摘要:This is a survey talk starting with Galois and the discovery of simple groups. Then continuing with Mathieu's sporadic simple groups and ideas involved. Then we take a short journey through Janko's groups $J_1$, $J_2$ and $J_3$ and some idea growing from there which lead to many further sporadic groups. We also will discuss existence proofs. The idea of the existence proof for $J_2$ yields also the existence proof of the monster. We will end with an open problem and a few philosophical questions.
